Artemis Fowl: Artemis Fowl [INTJ]

Is there really any question in anyone's minds what type this guy is?

Introverted Intuitive (Ni): Artemis is always ten steps ahead of everyone. He has the uncanny ability to predict the outcome of any situation. He often puts into play small details that have seem to have no significance, but will actually manipulate some future event that Artemis had foreseen. While he uses knowledge for his Te ends of obtaining wealth and power, he also enjoys accumulating knowledge for the more simple pleasure of forming a better understanding of the world. He is a genius who deals comfortably with the most complex theories and even comes up with many of his own. He pursues theories like his supposition that fairies do exist, even though traditional knowledge disregards them as fantasy...And of course he is right. Artemis tends to fall into the Ni habit of pursuing his own vision above all others and disregards anything that does not fit with his own knowledge. This habit is accentuated by the fact that he is nearly always right. Artemis always keeps a goal in mind. Whether it be saving the world, his father, or just getting rich(er).

Extroverted Thinking (Te): The motto of the Fowl family, "Aurum potestas est." means "Gold is power." Artemis takes this motto very seriously, putting great emphasis on the value of money, and by extension, the influence that it brings. Artemis always feels the need to control any situation that he finds himself in, doing his best to exert as much influence as he can over people and scenarios. He looks for influence in many places, cannibalizing fairy technology in order to use it against them. Artemis always presents himself to people confidently, and even though he is very young, he commands respect from adults that he deals with. He is caustically sarcastic and scathing when bothered, disassembling people almost unconsciously.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Being the cynical rational that he is, younger Artemis struggles over were to draw the line in his endeavors. He often feels the need to rationalize his decisions that could be tied to a moral system, putting it down as good tactics.  Over time Artemis develops an unconventional moral code that leads him toward more tasteful endeavors than kidnapping fairies. He lets his habit for thievery survive for quite a while, but he only steals from, "those who deserve it." Artemis tends to push away his own emotions but ends up making a lot of emotional decisions, especially when his parents are in danger. For a boy who supposedly cares only for himself, Artemis ends up saving a lot of people and in the end, he is even willing to sacrifice himself to keep others safe, a sentiment which no one is more confused with than Artemis.

Extroverted Sensing (Se): Physically, Artemis is pathetic. He always leaves any fighting, running jumping or shooting that needs to be done to Butler or Holly. Artemis prefers to manipulate the situation from afar. Any actual physical activity painfully reminds him (and everyone in his vicinity) of how uncoordinated and weak he is. His aversion to exercise is one of the few  tactical obstacle that he has trouble overcoming. No matter how many times he thinks "I should get in shape" while running away from (insert bad thing here) he still can't bring himself to learn self defense.
Artemis likes his food, clothes and general personal space to exact specifications.

Artemis Fowl: Holly Short [ESFP]

Extroverted Sensing (Se): One of the main reasons that Holly joined the LEP is a taste for adventure. For her, every second spent above ground is worth the risks. She is usually completely comfortable in dangerous situations. When a her life gets too dull, like when she quits the LEP, she gets bored. She needs to be doing something, preferably something fast paced and exiting. Holly has a sense of her environment that makes her one of best pilots in the LEP. She jumps into situations impulsively (usually spurred on by Fi) but she also has the skills to get out unscathed (mostly).

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Holly goes to great lengths to do what she believes to be the right thing. She is willing to sacrifice her career, her good name and her life in order to keep others safe. She often paves her own path and make her own moral decisions independently from outside influence. She has almost no regard for her own popularity, except of course when lack of it might prevent her from doing what she loves. While she joins the LEP because of the active lifestyle, the other reason is because she genuinely want to help "The People." She bases many of her decisions around that principle.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Holly works with people that she doesn't especially like (Artemis and Mulch) when it is practically necessary to get the job done. She doesn't just have a set of Fi principles, she also actively seeks ways to practically support them. In tense situations, Holly takes charge. She usually defers to someone with more knowledge than her, but if she is the most competent person present, she dishes out orders easily.

Introverted Intuition (Ni): Holly usually pays attention to her instincts, but if she can't find objective evidence to back them up, she goes with a more immediate and apparent observation. She  has no patience for the subtleties that Artemis employs as she tries futilely to predict his next move. Once they trust each other more, Holly leaves the planning and scheming to him.

Rango: Rango [ENTP]

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Rango sees the potential of objects in his environment, like using a bottle or a vending machine as a hiding place. Usually however, he sees the abstract potential, rather than the literal. This can be illustrated by the invention of his name and persona, both created on the spot by the subtle suggestions of his surroundings, down to the word he happened to see at the time, "Durango." He invents tall tales effortlessly, backing them up with overblown statements and flowery language. His stories aren't well thought out but townsfolk trust them because they are all concepts that they are familiar with, since Rango picked them up from their own suggestions.

Introverted Thinking (Ti): Early in the movie, Rango spends little time processing. He relies on Ne/Fe to get him out of jams and neglects to make sure that his tall tales actually make sense. Later, Rango learns to use Ti. He works out logical puzzles like the Mayor's scheme based on a series of deductions, and then concocts a plan to defeat Rattlesnake Jake and the Mayor simultaneously .

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): In keeping with the fact that he is literally a chameleon, Rango adapts to his environment. He spends a lot of time Ne/Fe looping, pulling whatever idea will get people to like and accept him out of thin air. He adopts the values of the townsfolk  almost immediately, putting on his role of a gunslinger with typical tert Fe flair. He says and does things that will get the townsfolk to accept him, striking on exactly what they need: Someone to believe in. When his exterior moral reference is shaken (Rattlesnake Jake shows that he has been lying to the townsfolk the whole time) he encounters an identity crisis. Until of course, he is advised by a trusted source. (The "spirit of the west.) In the end, he genuinely want's to help the town of Dirt, risking his life to save them.

Introverted Sensing (Si): The details tend to escape Rango. He has little experience to base his identity on, except in a moment of self doubt when he fears that since he was never a "real" hero, he never will be. In the end however, he remembers an important detail that he then uses to defeat Rattlesnake Jake. (He's afraid of the hawk.)

Artemis Fowl: Butler [ISTJ]

All the pictures I can find are terrifyingly ugly fan art, Sorry.

Introverted Sensing (Si): As a bodyguard, Butler is responsible for mapping out environments for potential threats. He does so systematically, noticing the most subtle changes that could be a danger to Artemis. He has instincts that approach pure intuition, except they are always based directly on his years of experience. Not Ni but Si. He has a great trust in his experiences and is constantly advising Artemis on the typical way a situation is approached. His knowledge of the typical paves the way for Artemis to enact an atypical plan. His almost unwavering trust of Artemis is based on years of experience. He knows what Artemis is capable of because he has experienced it firsthand.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Butler assesses objects in his environment based on their utility. ("Could we survive the fall if we used the mattress?") He calculates the potential of people and objects based on whether or not they help him achieve his objective: Protecting Artemis. While he trusts Artemis, Butler often questions the practicality of his plans. He executes his part of whatever plan Artemis has cooked up with maximum efficiency, bringing down enemies with no unnecessarily flashy maneuvers.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Butler has a strong sense of honor. He is almost completely loyal to Artemis but he also respectfully objects to "distasteful" jobs, like kidnapping Holly. As a bodyguard, Butler has been taught to never grow attached to "the principal" (Artemis) He pretty much throws this rule out the window, developing a strange brother/father relationship with Artemis.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Butler typically likes to rely on hard facts, not supposition. However, when in tough situations he works on instinct, intuitively tying experiences in the present to his Si experiences without much conscious thought.

Portal: GLaDOS [INTJ]

Introverted Intuition (Ni): GLaDOS's existence revolves around one abstract ideal: "Science." Everything else comes second. All of her mind games, tests and traps, are focused on the ultimate end of collecting data and building a more comprehensive world view. She bides her time, patiently keeping in mind her ultimate objective. It's hard to say if she has "hunches" since she's almost all robot but she is certainly good at predicting the outcome of a given situation. She typically focuses on one objective at a time, moving on only when the original idea doesn't work.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): GLaDOS pursues her goal of "doing science" ruthlessly. She sees other beings as a means to an end, killing them out of hand when they cease to be useful. She manipulates Chell mercilessly, telling her lies and half truths in order to get a certain reaction that will benefit "science". GLaDOS runs the entirety of aperture, which, as we see in the second game, is enormous. She maintains the all of the essential systems, and, when she awakes after the facility falls into disrepair, she restores it to efficiency as quickly as possible.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): GLaDOS's moral system is her own. Obviously she did not base it on the morality of the scientists who made her or she wouldn't have killed them all. Her beliefs on what is acceptable or not are based almost solely on whether it furthers the pursuit of "science." When her emotions match up with her Ni/Te objectives, she indulges them gleefully. She getting twisted pleasure from manipulating and hurting people as illustrated by her habit of trying to convince Chell that she is a bad person. Her attempts to put Chell in a bad light show the subjectivity of her moral system. Finally, at the very end, GLaDOS saves Chell. She saves her for no rational reason, but rather because the small bit of humanity in her told her that it was the right thing to do.

Extroverted Sensing (Se): GLaDOS would rather interact from a distance than up close. She is never in a hurry to do anything, drawing it out, turning it over and over gain in her mind (Ni.) She almost always interacts with Chell remotely and seems to have no need for immediacy in anything. Basically, she almost never uses Se.

Bakuman: Yuriko Aoki [ISTJ]

Introverted Sensing (Si): Aoki bases her worldview on past experience. However, unlike Iwase, she knows the limitations of her Si and learns to compliment her subjective experience with Te/Ne, refining it to be realistic. A look at Aoki's apartment shows that it is neat and organized, with everything in its proper place.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Aoki can be a bit of a robot sometimes, establishing an objective and then systematically working to achieve it. She usually speaks with almost no emotion, showing an obvious tendency to state what she believes to be the facts without a thought to anything but accuracy. Her decisions are almost never effected by emotions that are not approved by Te.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Aoki's Te/Fi mesh to form an uncompromising attitude. Her Fi values and beliefs, (an artist must be true to their art, men cannot be trusted) are secure against most outside influence. As the show progresses, Aoki learns to be more flexible in the right ways, opening up to the right people.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Aoki slowly learns to be more open to new ideas and methods. She shows a little "In the grip" behavior when she falls for Tagaki, suddenly opening up to new possibilities without sifting through them methodically.

Bakuman: Aiko Iwase [ESTJ]

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Iwase's entire life is results oriented. She judges herself and other people almost exclusively based on achievement. She is initially attracted to Tagaki as a rival, a person who could match her in intelligence. She scoffs at Tagaki's Ni vision of being a manga artist, telling him that he should make "real" plans for the future. However, when he succeeds, she refuses to be outdone and starts making her own manga.

Introverted Sensing (Si): Iwase achieves her Te goals through meticulous study and hard work. She is a star student through her natural intelligence, but also through her willingness to put in the extra mile. A lot of her Si behaviors are unhealthy. She refuses to let go of experiences like her idea that there was some romantic agreement between her and Tagaki (There wasn't) She often refuses to use her Te to process her subjective, and often inaccurate experiences, sticking to her skewed version of the story.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): When spurred on by her other functions, Iwase branches out with creative ideas, writing a popular light novel that is turned into an extremely popular manga. Her Ne doesn't compliment her Si at all and she has tendency to jump to conclusions and then perceive them as actual facts.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Iwase is extremely emotionally immature. Her supposedly objective logical deductions are usually based on her immature need to be the best, which is of course based on her long standing record of academic success (Si). An argument could be made that she really did have feelings for Tagaki in high school, but she buries her emotions under so many layers of rationalization that it's hard to tell.

Saturday, February 13, 2016

Bakuman: Shinta Fukuda [ESFP]

Extroverted Sensing (Se): Fukuda's art is as visceral and evocative as he is allows to make it. He actually is forced to tone down his manga's graphic violence in order to get it published in a magazine meant for a varied audience. He takes the world head on, speaking and acting in the moment. His wardrobe is carefully selected to produce a specific visual effect. He also rides a motorcycle, both as an exiting means of transportation, and also to add to his macho image.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Fukuda scoffs at the thought of letting anyone make him do what he doesn't want to do. He constantly cultivates his independence. He comes to odds with his editor constantly, stubbornly asserting his right to draw whatever he wants. He has a great dislike for the publishing system that  encourages only manga that sell well, maintaining that manga is an art form that deserves greater respect.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Fukuda unites the rookie manga artists trying to get into Shonen Jack Magazine. He doesn't do it out of a need for harmony, but for the practical reason that those with a common aspiration are stronger together than apart. Fukuda never minces his words. He speaks completely factually and is annoyed by people who don't look at the facts.

Introverted Intuition (Ni): Fukuda always keeps a consistent vision. He focuses on goals like "changing Jack," and of course his own dream of being a popular manga artist. He has a strong and consistent idea of things like "the way manga should be."

Sunday, February 7, 2016

Bakuman: Kaya Miyoshi [ESFJ]

Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Miyoshi often alternates between being bossy and pushy, and being kind, helpful and supportive. She makes other peoples problems her own and presses others with her own problems. At first, her relationship with Tagaki is one sided. She basically forces him to go out with her. Her devotion to him pays of later, as they build a relationship and eventually get married.
Miyoshi has a lot of trouble understanding high Fis like Mashiro and Azuki, wondering why they don't bring everything out into the open like she does.

Introverted Sensing (Si): Miyoshi has a great regard for, "the way things are done."  ("No, you're not supposed to say that. You're supposed to say,") etc. Other than her Fe requirements, Miyoshi expects little. Once she has what she wants (Tagaki), she is satisfied, looking for little more than being helpfull to Mashiro and Tagaki and helping them achieve their dreams. She has few aspirations of her own, preferring the simple things in life.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): When Miyoshi first sees her friends working hard to achieve their dreams, she wants to be like them. She jumps to the conclusion that she want's to be an author. A few days later she quits. The initial burst of Ne is gone and she starts to realize that she doesn't need some kind of crazy plan of her own, what she really enjoys is helping other people achieve their goals. Miyoshi is usually enthusiastic, coming up with simple but thoughtful ideas to help out others.

Introverted Thinking (Ti): Miyoshi's analysis of a situation is usually heavily Fe/Si ("In my experience, the way it's done is...") Her logic usually loops back to what her Fe wanted in the first place, following a subjective path.

Saturday, February 6, 2016

Bakuman: Gora Miura [ENFP]

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Miura is enthusiastic to a fault. He at first makes the introverted Mashiro and Tagaki uncomfortable with his outgoing attitude, but they grow more comfortable with him over time. Miura has a tendency to embrace ideas indiscriminately. Unfortunately this means he doesn't always use his Te properly.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): The ideas that Miura does settle on, he holds onto loyally, ignoring a lot of evidence that might indicate that it wasn't such a good idea at all. Miura is frustrated with Tagaki and Mashiro because he thinks that they don't trust his opinion as an editor and desperately tries to get them to take his opinions seriously. When Mashiro ends up in the hospital from overwork, Miura feels responsible. Miura has a tendency to brood when things don't go his way.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Miura has trouble using this function for much of the second season. As it progresses however, he learns to apply it more effectively. He gives boxes of reference material to Mashiro and Tagaki, even going so far as to personally annotate the whole box of books. When things aren't going well, Miura brings out the data, poring over graphs and charts of the progress of previous Manga series to inform his decisions.

Introverted Sensing (Si): As Mashiro and Tagaki's editor, Miura handles all of the details of getting their manga published. He encourages Mashiro and Tagaki to pander to their audience when their series is in danger of being cancelled because he thinks he knows, "the kind of thing people will like."

Bakuman: Niizuma Eiji [ESFP]

Extroverted Sensing (Se): You might think that it's hard to be physically active when you draw manga all day, this guy can pull it off. He draws as if it's a contact sport. When he gets exited Niizuma randomly executes acrobatics stunts, leaping onto of his chair in displays of pure physical enthusiasm. Loud music is often blaring in his studio. His greetings and exclamations are as enthusiastic as his art. (see picture below) Niizuma is also a brilliant artist, a genius even, able to draw manga storyboards that would take others days in fifteen minutes.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): At first, Niizuma's childishness makes him seem emotionally immature, but in reality he is childlike in a good way. He supports others enthusiastically, maintaining the same friendly attitude towards everyone no matter how they treat him. He cares little about what others think of him to the point of being oblivious.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): While he doesn't mean to be unkind, Niizuma speaks his mind bluntly and factually. He has a very good idea of the technical aspects of being a manga artist although he often ignores it, disregarding deadlines and meetings. When Mashiro and Tagaki start doing a manga project that he knows will fail, Niizuma calls them out on television in a subtle but calculated bid to set them on the right track.

Introverted Intuition (Ni): Niizuma's intuition is uncanny. He predicts the winners of monthly manga contests accurately to the point of foreseeing an almost unheard of tie. He predicts Muto Ashirogi's success as soon as he sees them and never waivers on his hunches. His Se and Ni work almost seamlessly, translating the manga in his head into his art effortlessly onto paper.

Wednesday, February 3, 2016

Bakuman: Akito Tagaki [INTJ]

Introverted Intuition (Ni): It is actually originally Tagaki's idea to team up with Mashiro and become manga artists, not Mashiro's. He follows this dream unwaveringly, focusing intensely on his vision of the future. As the writer of the two man team, Tagaki imagines many original premises for manga. He envisions worlds with a specific premise and then lets the implications of the different aspects of his fictional world inspire him. Tagaki is a star student, acing tests and exams without much studying at all.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Between him and Mashiro, Tagaki is the more practical one. He turns to statistics when weighing the merits of different strategies and takes advantage of systems and analyzes exactly how they work. One example is the way he summarizes how well they need to do on surveys to get a successful rating. Tagaki lights up at the sight of a graph. ("I'm a data guy!") He is almost as critical of his writing as Mashiro is of his art. Every idea for a story comes after a series of rejections leaving tons of ideas that just don't make the cut.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Tagaki is almost as passionate about his ideals as Mashiro. He has a great emotional investment in his Ni vision, rising and falling with each success and failure. He is unwavering in his loyalty to his vision, but also to Mashiro, walking out on Miura when he suggests that he work with someone else. When presented with new information, Tagaki takes a little while to fit it into his value system. He is much more open to new ideas and, unlike Mashiro, Tagaki is much more flexible when faced with a choice between being strictly "true to himself" and being practical.

Extroverted Sensing (Se): Tagaki styles himself as a gambler in life, considering carefully and then jumping at opportunity. He is much more cautious than Mashiro, but nonetheless takes a lot of chances on the spur of the moment. When a slimy classmate offers to replace Mashiro as his artist, Tagaki loses it, beating the guy up and gaining the first suspension of his life.

Bakuman: Moritaka Mashiro [ISFP

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Mashiro is passionate about many things. Manga, his freedom as an artist, and of course his fiance Azuki. He keeps his strongest opinions to himself until he feels that they are threatened and then he defends them fiercely and explosively. His entire life is driven by a powerful need to stay true to himself by actualizing his dreams. Even though he was fourteen at the time Mashiro has little misgivings about proposing to Azuki and his love for her is wholesome, if a bit naive. However, he only sees her under extenuating circumstances, staying true to their mutual vow to not see each other other until Mashiro is a successful Manga artist. Mashiro will do almost anything to fight for what he believes in, even working himself hard enough to end up in the hospital. Once in the hospital, he still won't stop drawing, even when it could threaten his life.

Extroverted Sensing (Se): Most of Mashiro's Se is channeled into drawing, at which he excels. He is natural artist who's work far surpasses that of other artists his age. He reacts impulsively to anything that threatens his Fi convictions, taking huge risks when he sees something that will bring him closer to his dream.

Introverted Intuition (Ni): Mashiro has a strong and unwavering vision of the future, were he is a popular manga artist and can marry Azuki. He has very good instincts when it comes to manga and the direction that he and Tagaki should take. He trusts those instincts to be accurate and uses them to form his Fi convictions. While he leaves the writing to Tagaki, Mashiro envisions evocative character well enough to bring them to life in his art.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Mashiro's Fi/Ni has big plans, so he is forced to dig deep and use all of the tools at his disposal, especially his Te. He is pragmatic and critical when it comes to his work, tirelessly working to improve art that he is not satisfied with. He critiques Tagaki's ideas ruthlessly, unapologetically informing him of the flaws that could endanger their projects. Mashiro often sets his own deadlines and  would work into the night rather than fall behind. He keeps careful track of the time, as illustrated by his meticulously kept calendar that keeps him on schedule.

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

Rangers Apprentice: Alyss Mainwaring [ENTJ]

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Alyss approaches any situation she faces with calm objective analysis. She refers to the facts first, looking for evidence of her Ni theories before accepting them. Alyss figures out how the night warrior illusion is done faster than Will, systematically assessing the facts while following up on her original hunch. Alyss is almost constantly composed, presenting herself to others as confident and assertive. She has a clear understanding of the cause and effect of diplomacy and the complex hierarchy that is essential to her work as a diplomatic courier.

Introverted Intuition (Ni): Alyss deals easily in the realm of supposition. She finds it simple to imagine and understand scenarios that she hasn't experience firsthand making her a convincing actress. Her focus compliments Wills Ne and together they cover possibilities efficiently without becoming too narrow minded or too indecisive. Alyss asses scenario by complimenting her Ni instincts with Te. Alyss's first hunch about the night warrior illusion was correct and she understands the ins and outs of Sir Keren's psychology before she gets any input from him verbally.

Extroverted Sensing (Se): While Alyss isn't a warrior, she is comfortable with wielding a dagger when dangerous circumstances arise. She rides well and throws herself into performances like her Lady Gwendolyn impression with gusto. From a young age Alyss moved with grace and poise and act quickly on the Ni hunches that she is confident in.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Alyss is a balanced representative of the ENTJ type. Far from bossing people around, she is a natural diplomat. She treats the people around her, whether she knows them personally or not, with kind consideration. However, she also treats others with the firmness of a Te/Fi, accepting no argument when she knows she is in the right. Alyss tries repeatedly to get Sir Kerren to turn away from his path of treachery, not just for her own sake, but for his. When he asks her to marry him however, she refuses without hesitation, standing firm on the personal conviction that she wculd never marry a traitor, especially one that she does not love. It is obvious that Alyss cares deeply for Will but it takes allot to make her tell him. While Will  the Ti/Fe doesn't want to confess his feelings for her because he fears rejection, Alyss the Te/Fi hesitates because she wants she wants to get the facts straight ("Did he really say 'I love you' or did I imagine it?")

I wrote the most for the inferior function. That's a new one.

While some might type Alyss as an ENFJ because she is such a good diplomat, I only see Te/Fi for her. It's actually really cool to see a character I can type as an ENTJ without talking about them being arrogant and bossy at times. Because lets face it, bossiness is a major NTJ trap.

Monday, February 1, 2016

Phineas and Ferb: Isabella Garcia-Shapiro [ENFP]

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Isabella is always up for a new and interesting experience. She enthusiastically embraces any new gadget, invention or project that Phineas and Ferb create. A peek inside her head reveal a realm of fantasies, most of which involve Phineas. She is occasionally prone to anxious worrying but most of the time Isabella is upbeat and optimistic.

Introverted Feeling (Fi): While it's obvious to everyone that she has a massive crush on Phineas, Isabella never finds the courage to tell him. (outside of star wars crossovers and days that for whatever reason nobody remembers of course) She is kind and helpful to everyone but generally gives them their own space emotionally.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): When Isabella is confronted with  problem, she coordinates her team of "fireside girls" with an eye towards maximum efficiency. She has no trouble issuing commands and taking on a leadership role. As a fireside girl she systematically earns patches, managing the other fireside girls achievements as well.

Introverted Sensing (Si): Isabella often refers to the fireside girl handbook, trusting it as a depository of information. For the most part however Isabella avoids the routine, tossing it out in favor of the new and exiting.
